Minnesota Twins Offseason Part 2

Well today is less snowy than yesterday but still cold. So back to Twins speculation, yesterday we talked about all the positions and today we are going to talk about trades to make our lineup better.

2006 Starting Lineup

Shannon Stewart LF
Jason Bartlett SS
Joe Mauer C
DH
Justin Morneau 1B
Torri Hunter CF
3B
Jason Kubel RF
Michael Cuddyer 2B

Bench
Mike Redmond C
Lew Ford OF
Nick Punto IF
Luis
Rodriguiz IF
Jason Tyner OF

So we need an actually third baseman and a DH that can hit deep.

Third Base options Free Agency
  1. Bill Mueller: He wants to go to the west coast to the Dodgers. I think the Twins have a slim chance of getting him. He is an average hitter and probably only has three years left.
  2. Joe Randa: He wants to play for the Twins which is ok. He put up outstanding numbers for the Reds, ut he only puts up average numbers in other ballparks.
  3. Nomar Garciaparra: Played third base last year for the Cubs and had that horrible groin injury. He would be a viable option for third base and is probably the best option for the Twins, because of age and the past numbers he has put up.
Third Base options Trades
  1. Troy Glaus Arizona Diamondbacks: Put up good numbers for Arizona last year, and is a soild right handed bat. He has 3 years left on his contract with an average of 12 million a year, maybe to much for the Twins.
  2. Kevin Youkilis Boston Red Sox: Is a Joe Mauer like hitter doesn't have good power numbers, but can hit the gaps. The Red Sox traded for Mike Lowell so he should be available for so pitching prospects.
  3. Hank Blalock Texas Rangers: Is a power hitter for Texas they do need pitching and lost out on Beckett. Is a left handed bat that would probably bat fifth or fourth but we do have Mauer and Morneau. He might cost a little more than Youkilis.
Designated Hitter options Free Agency
  1. Carl Everett: Put up great numbers last year for the White Sox and is a switch hitter, but some call him a clubhouse cancer. How much can one guy be a cancer when we have Mike Ryan DHing?
  2. Tim Salmon: Hasn't played a full season in three years, but has put up soild numbers in the past decade he is a right handed bat that could strive in the Twins system.
  3. Reggie Sanders: If the Cardinals don't pick him up maybe the Twins could get him. Has great power numbers and I think his performance in the wild card was great.
  4. Bernie Williams: The Yankees will probably resign him to a contract. He is a horrible fielder but could be the best hitter over the past decade. The Twins might want to go after him.
  5. Sammy Sosa: He was injuried the past two years but he has some power left in him and could be a great DH in the American league. He has put up great power numbers and still has a big bat.
My new 2006 Starting Lineup

Shannon Stewart LF
Jason Bartlett SS
Joe Mauer C
Reggie Sanders DH
Justin Morneau 1B
Torri Hunter CF

Jason Kubel RF
Kevin Youkilis 3B

Minnesota Twins Offseason

Well it is a snowy morning in Minneapolis this morning, and I think it is the perfect time to talk Minnesota Twins baseball. The Twins come off a season where they found out that they have no big time hitters in there lineup. So lets go through the lineup what we got and a little speculation on what I think they should go after.

  1. Catchers: Joe Mauer is coming off a soild season where he hit over .300 with some power and some RBI's. He played soild defense and has a knack of throwing out runners in the clutch. Mike Redmond is a clutch hitter he knocked in many 26 RBI's with only 148 at bats. The catcher position is our best position and should be soild for years.
  2. First Baseman: Justin Morneau came off a off-season where he had chicken pox and other aliments. Then when he finally getting back into the groove he got hit in the head in Seattle. He had a pretty good year 79 RBI's, 22 HR's and 23 doubles, but he had .239 average and striked out 94 times and only walked 44. He is going to be fine and his defense is soild.
  3. Second Baseman: We had five second baseman and all of them were below average. Luis Rivas was the starter for the beginning of the season and his hitting stats sucked, and defense was good not going to be back. Nick Punto is very injury prone and should be our utility infielder. Luis Rodriguiz was a god sent last year and should also be another utility infielder. Boone and Abnernathy were our other second baseman and there not going to be back next year.
  4. Shortstop: Jason Bartlett is the future shortstop of this team and the coaches need to stick with him because he is a soild bat in the lineup and he has shown great improvements in defense. Juan Castro was the other starter and his defense was soild but his batting was bad and he was injuried alot he has one more year left and might be back.
  5. Third Base: Michael Cuddyer was our third base most of the season and he put up better second half numbers. He is going to be moved to second base or back to right field which will suit him better.
  6. Left Fielders: Shannon Stewart is getting old but he is our best clutch hitter I wish he had some more speed for a lead off hitter, but overall he was fighting injuries all year, and a soild year.
  7. Center Fielders: Torri Hunter was having a really good year until he broke his ankle. He is going to be back, if not going to be traded. All speculation has said that he won't be traded. Lew Ford played soild after Torri went down he didn't put up the numbers like 2004, but played rock soild defense he will be back as a utility outfielder.
  8. Right Fielders: Jacque Jones is going to be signed with another team. He strikes out too much and hits lefties bad. Jason Tyner looked like a leadoff hitter and has been re-signed for Rochester or a utility outfielder. Jason Kubel is coming off that horrible knee accident and should be ready for spring training. He is the X-factor and might be platooned with Cuddyer to play Right.
  9. Designated Hitters: Matthew Lecroy is gone and will probably be playing ball in Japan next year. He hits lefties great but againest righties he was awful. So they will need a new DH next year to be platooned with Lew Ford.
2006 Starting Lineup

Shannon Stewart LF
Jason Bartlett SS
Joe Mauer C
DH
Justin Morneau 1B
Torri Hunter CF
3B
Jason Kubel LF
Michael Cuddyer 2B

Bench
Mike Redmond C
Lew Ford OF
Nick Punto IF
Luis
Rodriguiz IF
Jason Tyner OF

So we need a soild 3rd baseman and a DH to make this team soild. Tomorrow more on the Twins and who they should get and later in the week highschool hockey speculation. Please leave comments.

Minnesota Vikings Win, T-Wolves Win, and Wild Win what a weekend

When was the last time that all the Minnesota teams have won in the same weekend. I hope everybody had a good Thanksgiving. I made some turkey, potatoes, green beans, gravy, stuffing, and pie.

Well back to sports talk the Wild came back and won a game againest the St. Louis Blues. Gaborik looked better when he came back from his hip injury. The wild are 10-10-2 and there starting to get some big scorers back they need to go on a big winning streak to get back in contention. The J.V. has played .500 for us and we thank them but lets, let Gaborik, and Chonaird play and win some games.

The Timberwolves took a hard loss on Wednesday but on Friday and Saturday they won two big games againest the Caveliers and Bucks. Marco Jaric looked good on Friday but just ok on Saturday. Lebron James is a star and he plays like Michael Jordan he makes shots that make you say WoW. Kevin Garnett is playing with good spirit and I think the t-wolves players like there new coach. If there going to make a big playoff push they need to trade Wally or Candy-Man for a number two shooter because if K.G. is covered we don't have a second guy that can make teams scared.

Lastly but not least the Vikings needed a win and they got one againest the Browns. Marcus Robinson was on the end of three passing touchdowns what a game for a good reciever. Every week some one steps up on this team and makes big plays this week was Marcus Robinson and C.J. Molsey. The Vikings go ahead and play the coachless Lions this week in Detroit. They need this game to keep playing good. After this week we only have one more away game so that's not so bad.
  • Week 13 @Detroit Lions
  • Week 14 St. Louis Rams*
  • Week 15 Pittsburgh Steelers*
  • Week 16 @Baltimore Ravens
  • Week 17 Chicago Bears*

Leave comments please. Tomorrow more Twins talk and highschool hockey talk.

Minnesota Wild Chatter

Well one day to thanksgiving and it is time to give thanks to the Minnesota Wild. They play tonight at home againest the Oilers, and it sounds like Gaborik is finally going to get the nod to start. I give thanks to him because his offense is needed badly. He is a superstar and could be the best player in the league if he could stay healthy.

Thanks to Manny Fernandez who is 6-3 on the year and has become the better goalie on this team. Dwayne Roloson is 3-6 on the year and has struggled at times to keep the team ahead. Roloson will probably get the start tonight and the Wild will probably lose because the Wild can't score and take stupid penalties.

Speaking of stupid penalties the Wild on Saturday night a game I went to had two bench minor penalties for too many men on the ice. I can see one penalty but two is unacceptable and the coaches need to be taken accounted for those penalties.

Thank You Kurtis Foster for playing defense like a true offensive defensemen should, and not the Flippe Kuba style of playing. He scored two beautiful goals on Saturday and has a slapshot that would make Patrick Roy crumble.

Thank You Minnesota exceutives for signing Brian Rolston he has been a pure joy to watch and hopefully will be a Wild player for a long time. And speaking of a heck of a shot he has got one that would make a grown man cry if hit.

And last but not least Thank you Sergi Zholtek a Minnesota Wild legend that made unbelievable goals on a Wild team that almost made the Stanley Cup finals it's third year of play. Zholtek died in the hands of his friend Darby Hendrickson in his native Lativa, he was remembered on Saturday night by his son. As I watched the highlight reel I remember he was the one player that could make a goal whenever you needed a big goal. Thanks You Minnesota Wild for bringing Hockey back and whatever you do never leave again.

Vikings WIN!!!

My thoughts on the Game:

My gameball goes to the linebackers of the Vikings. You might ask why, I say they made the defense better. They only had one mental breakdown that was a long completion to Samo Gado that E.J. Henderson screwed up on. Without great linebacker play they would have ran all over us.

Our offensive line needs to be fixed in the offseason, because if you can't give your quarterback 2 seconds to throw the ball than it needs to be revamped. But on the other hand the run blocking was awesome the push they got was outstanding. The rookie Johnson looked good at Tackle and might be the future of this team.

Mewelde Moore looked like that wrist injury is not bothering him anymore. He had over 100 yards rushing and he made some hard runs. Michael Bennett needs to run to the outside if he runs because he is to fast to crawl up the middle.

The secondary looked good except for two bad mental breakdowns. Winfield made some big hits and Edwards made a great play on a bad Farve pass and took it to the house. And all I can say is sign Brian Williams to a long time contract and his friend Koren Robinson to long term contracts.

Brad Johnson does what is needed to win games he doesn't make the mental mistakes like Culpepper use too. I am not claiming he is the long-term answer, but he makes the throws when needed. The only thing I would say to Brad Johnson is next time don't were gloves because some of your passes floated.

Overall it was a good win and puts the Vikings back in the hunt the rest of the schedule is up for grabs:
  • Week 12 Cleveland Browns*
  • Week 13 @Detroit Lions
  • Week 14 St. Louis Rams*
  • Week 15 Pittsburgh Steelers*
  • Week 16 @Baltimore Ravens
  • Week 17 Chicago Bears*

Early Football Draft Speculation Part Three

So where does that leave the Vikings well here is a position by postion scan of what draft picks, and what they need to do:

1. Middle Linebacker
  • Chad Greenway Iowa: Not a true MLB but has the senses to play on all linebacker positions. Plays hard great tackler, great speed, and has a real sense for the game. Could be taken between 1st to 15th draft picks.
  • Ahman Brown Virgina: Also not a true MLB but has great speed, and is a great tackler, he does have some off the field issues. Could be taken between 1st and 20th.
  • D'Qwell Jackson Maryland: A true MLB with speed and good size. Typical Maryland linebacker came from the same system as E.J. Henderson. Could be taken between the 10th and early second round.
  • Adul Hodge Iowa: This guy is a monster he can play the run and pass. He is a machine smart and can smell out a play. He runs very well, but can be stopped if doesn't play with big linemen. Could be taken between the 10th and 32nd picks.
2. Running Back
  • Gerald Riggs Jr. Tennessee: A fast complete runner lead tennessee to a victory over Florida. Downside he broke his ankle a couple of weeks ago and now has been declared injury prone. A second to third round selection.
  • Jerome Harrison Washington State: Shows home-run hitting speed. He's not all that big, but he can be a workhorse. A second to forth round selection.
  • Yvenson Bernard Oregan State: Shifty, stop and go player who runs between the tackles...also can line up as a receiver. A second to forth round selection.
  • LenDale White USC: White is a tough, physical running back who is a workhorse. He has the size of a fullback and is very difficult for defenders to bring down. Has deceptive speed and will occasionally break off the big run. Shows good burst through holes and consistently breaks tackles. A late first round to second round selection.
3. Safety
  • Jason Allen Tennessee: His size and speed makes him an intriguing prospect at corner, but he might be more suited for safety.
  • Will Gulley Houston: He's still trying to get back from a knee injury, he is big, speedy and always making big plays.
  • Wesley Smith Memphis: Smith was one of the top stars of last spring and kept it going with a huge season making 98 tackles and picking off three passes. At 6-3, he's a big, fast and dependable defender who should receive some All-Conference USA votes.
4. Quarterback
  • Brett Basanez Northwestern: Every game now, he breaks several NU Career Passing records as he starts his 4th season at QB. Presently holds NU's total passing, and total offense yardage records and is closing in on the most wins by a starting quarterback - with 17, he's 2 short of a tie.
  • Brodie Croyle Alabama: Croyle enters his senior year at Alabama coming off season-ending knee surgery a year ago. Despite an injury that plagued him in 2003, Croyle set the single-season record for pass attempts (341), was second in completions (182), 2nd in passing yards (2,303) and tied for the single-season passing touchdown mark (16).
  • Cody Hodges Texas Tech: He has a big arm and a good command of the offense, but he has to prove he can be consistent to hold down the starting job. He's one of the most mobile finishing third on the team with 31 rushing yards on his two carries.
  • Dondrial Pinkins South Carolina: Pinkins is a rock of a passer who's hard to bring down and has a big arm with excellentmobility. What he isn't is accurate only completing 50.3% of his throws with ten touchdown passes and nine interceptions

The last three positions are hard to speculate because it is unclear who is coming out.

  1. Center
  2. Tackle
  3. Cornerback
Final Notes

I have a bad thoughts on our chances tonight. Vikings need to play soild defense and special teams to win this game tonight. Our offense looked bad last week, but that was a soild defense you can ask the Eagles about that. They also need 150 on the ground to win tonight so run the heck out of the ball until they stop you. Ahmad Carroll looks bad and then pass againest him because he is small and slow. Run at KGB because he can't be a run stopper. My predictions it is going to be a 30-27 game with the Packers winning. Sorry fans.

Early Vikings Draft Speculation Part Two

So where does that leave the Vikings well here is a position by postion scan of there defensive, and what they need to do:
  1. Defensive Ends: Eramus James is going to be a good end, and Udeze was looking better before his injury. Scott is a run stopping machine and is great on running downs. Spencer Johnson looks better on the inside than the outside and should play DT for the rest of his life. Johnstone is a pass blitzing machine and should be around a couple more years. The Vikings have spent there first round draft picks on DE's so maybe free agency and no draft pick needed.
  2. Defensive Tackles: Pat Williams is a monster that has been a free agency dream, Kevin Williams is getting better after being over weight and slugish. Mosley has looked like a smaller Pat Williams and a suitable backup. Spencer Johnson has been injured and is not as speedy as Kevin but can get the job done. Martin is on injured reserve and needs a miracle to be a Viking next year. I think we don't need to spend a draft pick on the line this year.
  3. Middle Linebackers: Sam Cowart is getting old and sometimes looks slow covering TE's. E.J. Henderson was supposed to be our MLB of the future but looks good on the weak side. Rod Davis is a special teams machine but not a MLB of the future. The Vikings desperatly need to spend a draft pick on a MLB either a 1st through 3rd draft round pick on a MLB.
  4. Outside Linebackers: Keith Newman has been a god sent this year and is our strong side LB, E.J. Henderson plays weak side and he plays it well with the most tackles for LB's. Thomas has had problems and looks like another Ranoell Smith, Smith looks like he is meant for a 3-4 defense and doesn't have the LB senses needed to play in the 4-3, Harris has looked good at some times but mostly has been a huge disapointment. Farwell has looked good and might be a good option in a couple years. We have a lot of OLB's and there starting to Jell together, so no draft pick is needed in this years draft with this many people.
  5. Cornerbacks: Winfield is a tackling machine and a soild corner, Smoot has looked awful, but the boat and Steve Smith have made him look bad. Brian Williams is in a contract year and if the Vikings were smart they would resign him and Koren Robinson. Ralph Brown has looked like a forth corner back and a soild special teamer. After them there are two undrafted players who have looked alright in coverage. I think the vikings need to spend a 6th or 7th round draft pick on a cornerback just in case something goes wrong.
  6. Safeties: Darren Sharper has looked very good in purple, but he is injury prone. Chavous is in a contract year and has looked ok, but has missed some tackles and interceptions, I don't think he will be resigned. Offord looked like the future before he got injuried. Our 4th round draft pick Fox is going to be back next year, but is injury prone also. The Vikings need to spend a 2nd to 5th round draft pick on a safety for the future.
  7. Kickers/Punters: Kluwe is also been one of the best pickups of the years the guy is young and he can punt a mile. Elinger has looked like a promising pickup and has won two games for the Vikings this year. For the first time in 6 years the Vikings don't need to worry about special teams.
So what we got so far:
  1. Running Back or Middle Linebacker
  2. Running Back or Middle Linebacker or Safety
  3. Middle Linebacker or Safety
  4. Quarterback or Center or Safety
  5. Quarterback or Center or Safety
  6. Quarterback or Center or Tackle or Cornerback
  7. Quarterback or Center or Tackle or Cornerback

  1. Middle Linebacker
  2. Running Back
  3. Safety
  4. Quarterback
  5. Center
  6. Tackle
  7. Cornerback

News and Notes today

Eric's Rumors and Notes of the day
  • Mike Piazza a Twin? he has been contacted by the Twins about switching from Catcher to the DH position. Another right-handed bat in this left handed lineup that sounds good.

  • Minnesota Vikings have a secret weapon and his name is Fonti. Yes the 400 pound guard has been under double secret workouts and might start in place of Liwenski this week at Green Bay.

  • Reggie Sanders a Twin? St. Louis newspapers have been spamming that Reggie Sanders might be looking at the Twins as a place to play out his final years in the Major Leagues.

  • Coach Jacque Lemaire went nuts on his Wild players this week and made many players do wind spirits. The Star Tribune says Lemaire is tired of giving up leads at ends of games and wants his offense styled players to become more defensive. He even denied Gaborik and Choinard access to practice after he told the players they could practice, but were late to practice.
  • Jason Kubel knee injury is not progressing as good as the Twins want it too. The Star Tribune says that Kubel's knee similar to the injury Culpepper has, is taking longer than stated to heel and recover.
Schedule tonight:
  • Wolves and Wizards 6:10 pm tipoff
  • Survivor 7:00 pm

Thanks for the look, till tomorrow.

Early Vikings Draft Speculation

Well the Gophers have one more regular season game in Iowa this weekend, and the Vikings play interstate rival Green Bay on Monday Night Football. But I think this is a perfect time to about who the Vikings are going to draft in April. We all know this Vikings game is big on Monday to get back to .500 in the standings, but I also think it is a big game for the future draft status of this team. Being a very even league this year if the Vikings have a over .500 record you wouldn't think they would get to pick until the 14th or 15th spot in the draft. So if that happens some of the bigger draft picks are going to be gone such as: Matt Leinart QB, Reggie Bush RB, Vince Young QB, Brady Quinn QB and the Gophers own Laurence Maroney RB.

So where does that leave the Vikings well here is a position by postion scan of there offense, and what they need to do:
  1. Quarterbacks: With Daunte out for the full year and Brad Johnson as our current starter quarterback has become a high priority on the Vikings draft list next year. I think we will have to spend a 4th to 7th round pick on a new quarterback to learn the system, which would be perfect because a lot of great quarterbacks come from later rounds such as Brad Johnson.
  2. Runningbacks: With Moe Williams out for this year and our oldest runningback he has a 40% chance of coming back next year. Michael Bennett is a free agent next year and we probably moving on to a different team such as Denny's Arizona Cardinals. With that we only have injury prone Moore and rookie Fason this should be top on the list of draft needs. The Vikings need to spend a 1st or 2nd round pick on a running back.
  3. Wide Recievers: We have built a core of young talent and have pick up two Robinson's and a Taylor to fill in holes. I don't think we need to draft a wide reciever this year.
  4. Tight Ends: Jermaine Wiggins and Jimmy 'K' are good tight ends and they have signed both of them to long term contracts. I don't think we need to draft a tight end and have a good stable behind them.
  5. Tackles: Mount Mckinnie is in a contract year and I pretty sure he will resign but if he doesn't a draft pick will be needed, or free agency will be needed to be explored. Mike Rothensal is signed for the next three years and is a good honest white bread tackle. The vikings need a tackle but not till the 6th or 7th round pick for backup purposes.
  6. Guards: We have Johnson a promising prospect but still young, Liwenski is only good if Birk is playing, Goldberg has looked good but he is our only utlity lineman, and I think the key to next year's draft for guards is Fonti which if he comes in and plays good we will not need to draft. And I suspect that he will and no draft picks will be needed.
  7. Centers: Fowler has looked good and will make a good backup in this league. Birk is on his way back, but he is so injury prone and I think one more injury could cause more damage to this team so a draft pick is needed. A 4th to 7th round draft pick is needed for this team to shore up the line a bonus if he can play guard.
So what we got so far:
  1. Running Back
  2. Running Back
  3. Defense tomorrow
  4. Quarterback or Center
  5. Quarterback or Center
  6. Quarterback or Center or Tackle
  7. Quarterback or Center or Tackle
Defense Tomorrow, please leave comments:

News and Notes today

Still working hard to get the site perfect:
  • Culpepper has successful surgery on his knee for a ACL, PCL, and MCL tear in his knee.

  • Moe Williams another Viking had successful surgery on his knee too, and has been put on injured reserve. Can you say hello free agent.

  • Tim Salmon a Minnesota Twin? it has been rumored that he might make a good DH. If you don't know anything about Salmon he hasn't played a full season in a long time.

  • Mike Lowell trade a brewing, the Twins might look at Mike Lowell as a third basemen for the Twins in 2006 if the Marlins pick some of his salary.
  • Steriods and MLB policy has changed it rules and upped the ante to 50 games for first time offenders. Can you say watch out and learn to read English Juan Rincon.
  • And last but not least are the Vikings better without Culpepper SI looks at the stats.

Wolves need to clean house

Well I watched a bad basketball team lose to another bad basketball team last night and the teams were the Houston Rockets and our Minnesota Timberwolves. The game was going good until the fourth when Coach Casey decided to put a lineup out that couldn't score. I have two words for coach Casey put Rashad McCants in the kid is a dynamite scorer, and his defense will come with more time on the court. I remember watching Kobe Bryant his first season he was a horrible defender, but got better over time.
The T-wolves need a change they need to get rid of Wally-World two comments on Wally first the guy is a horrible defender and he loves not moving his feet on defense. Second of all the guys on the team he is one of the most unsportsmanlike people in the world. Trade him for a draft pick or a younger player or an older player with a shorter contract.
I would keep these players Carter, Jaric, Hudson, Frahm, McCants, Dupree, Griffin, Madson, and the other two players we have in development leagues Jones, and the Indiana PG. I would like to get rid of Wally, Hassell, Candy-Man, and sorry to say KG. These players need to be moved and we need younger scorer threats. Face it people this team isn't going anywhere and it doesn't look like there getting any better. This team is back to being the 6-8 seed and losing out in the first round of the playoffs. What are your comments let me know.

News and Notes today

Well the site is up and running but I am still working on it. Some notes:

    • Twins it has been rumored that they are looking at Nomar Garciaparra to play 3B for the Twins next year, but the deal probably won't happen until December 7th because the Twinkies won't want to give up a draft pick. http://www.kfan.com/otherside/doogiesdirt.html
  • KG traded to the Bulls it might be a thought at the trading deadline.http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/writers/marty_burns/11/14/garnett/index.html
  • There has been some comments that Roloson should take a back seat to Manny, but my own thoughts are there doing fine spitting time.
  • Schedule tonight:

Welcome to Sports Talk

A little background information on myself I was born in Northern Minnesota and I am a sports fanatic. I played ice hockey since I was 2 years old and grew up watching and admiring Minnesota Highschool Hockey and section 8a and 8aa and saw the likes of Keith Ballard, T.J. Oshie, Jon Waibel, and of course Henry Boucha play hockey. Also with the hockey I watched every game the Vikings, Twins, Wild, and Timberwolves have played for the last 20 years. I went to college at the University of Minnesota Duluth where I was a Bulldog hockey watcher. Currently I live in the Twin Cities and have grown to love all Minnesota Sports teams. I created this blog to voice my own thoughts on Minnesota sports.
